In spite of a turbulent past Piran has retained its distinctive charm. Written records mentioning the town of Piran go back to pre-Roman times. Over the centuries the townspeople have made their living by fishing, handicrafts and trade in goods such as salt, wine, oil and fish.

Various musical, cultural and theatrical performances are organised throughout the year in the town squares. Events such as the Piran Music Evenings, the international artists’ Ex tempore exhibition, the Primorska Summer Festival and the cribs displayed in Piran’s churches during December are a further attraction.

Stone-slabbed alley-ways, cultural, historical and religious buildings, palaces, lively squares, numerous museums and galleries, town walls, an aquarium and highly recommended restaurants - all this and more can be found in this jewel on the Mediterranean coast.
